Sexual Assault and Rape

Sexual assault can take many different forms, but one thing remains the same: it’s never the victim’s fault. Sexual assault and rape include sexual acts or attempts to obtain a sexual act by violence or coercion regardless of the relationship to the victim.

CAPSA is the state and federally recognized sexual assault and rape recovery center serving Cache and Rich counties.  If you or someone you know has experienced or been impacted by sexual assault or rape, please call CAPSA at (435) 753-2500 to speak with a caseworker and learn about options and resources available to help you.

Important note: If you are under 18 and you disclose that you have been raped or sexually assaulted to CAPSA, and also disclose identifying information such as your name, address, phone number, etc., we are required by law to report it to police.

Definitions of Abuse

Many people believe that rape and sexual assault are committed by strangers. However, more than 80% of those who are raped or sexually abused know their attacker.

Here are terms to help understand the type of abuse:

What is sexual assault?

The term sexual assault refers to sexual contact or behavior that occurs without consent of the victim. Some forms of sexual assault include:

  • Attempted rape
  • Fondling or unwanted sexual touching
  • Forcing a victim to perform sexual acts, such as oral sex or penetrating the perpetrator’s body
  • Penetration of the victim’s body

It is not your fault

It is not your fault if you have been raped or sexually assaulted. Anything you did to survive the abuse is a good thing, and the main task during an assault is survival. Every survivor of sexual violence is different and reacts in his or her own unique way to an assault. Many people freeze, which is an automatic response in the primitive part of the brain meant to increase survival.

After an Assault

The first step of the healing process is to take care of yourself. After an assault, you have many important decisions to make including:

  • Who do you tell
  • Do you report your abuse
  • Do you take legal action

Forensic Exam

A forensic exam (Code R) is used to collect evidence in the case you ever want to pursue prosecutions. This exam must be done within 6 days/144hours.  Completing a Code R does not require you to pursue legal actions. However, by completing a Code R exam, any evidence collected will be saved and can be used should you pursue prosecution later. In Cache Valley, Code R exams are conducted at Cache Valley Hospital in the Emergency Department located at 2380 N. 400 E., North Logan.

A CAPSA advocate can be with you during the Code R process, regardless of whether or not you decide to provide law enforcement with a statement. A CAPSA advocate will provide emotional support during the examination and report-taking.

Medical Attention

Medical attention is vital, as you may have injuries of which you are unaware. A medical professional can also test you for sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy and provide appropriate treatment.

There are several resources in Cache Valley for medical care, however, if you have been sexually assaulted, Cache Valley Hospital or Franklin County Medical Center are the only locations for a Forensic Examination.
